The Spanish Health Economics Association (AES) organises the "Economic evaluation of public health interventions. Application to cancer screening" pre-congress workshop, which will precede the 37th Health Economics Conference. The objective of this workshop is to describe the methodology and use of economic evaluations in evaluating Public Health interventions. The MISCAN model for the evaluation of cancer screening, developed by the Erasmus University Rotterdam's Department of Public Health, will be taken as an example. This model was funded by the US National Cancer Institute's CISNET programme and reproduces the natural history of cancer and how this is modified with screening, thereby allowing impact to be calculated on both an epidemiological and economic level.
The workshop thus provides an excellent opportunity for understanding the application of models that represent the natural history of the disease in the evaluation of Public Health interventions. Its practical approach provides information on the models' components and their application in order to calculate results in terms of cancer incidence, quality-adjusted life expectancy, use of resources and economic cost. Likewise, the manner in which these types of models are applied in different populations due to the challenge posed by validation and calibration will be presented.

Iris Lansdorp-Vogelaar, PhD, is a Professor at the Erasmus MC Department of Public Health and principal investigator of the colorectal and oesophageal cancer section. Since 2003, she has been responsible for the management and development of the MISCAN-Colon model and the UW-MISCAN oesophagus model. Her modelling work informed the 2008 US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations and the Dutch national colorectal cancer detection programme. Her work has been published in influential medical journals. As a member of the European Cancer Network, she is the lead author of a chapter in the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Colorectal Cancer Screening. In 2012, she received a career development award from the Department of Public Health to determine efficient and effective methods for model validation and calibration. Her current research focuses more on explaining colorectal cancer disparities, on individualising colorectal cancer and surveillance recommendations, as well as on the surveillance of trends in oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Arantzazu Arrospide, PhD, has a degree in Mathematics and is a doctor of Public Health. She undertakes her work at the AP-OSIs Research Unit of Gipuzkoa, which is headquartered at OSI Alto Deba. Arrospide is a member of the Biodonostia Institute's research group on evaluating chronic diseases, as well as the Health Services Research on Chronic Patients Network of the Institute of Health Carlos III. She has also led the evaluation of cancer screening programmes in the Basque Country and, for the evaluation of the colorectal cancer screening programme, she adapted the MISCAN model during a stay in Rotterdam. She is now working on the evaluation of interventions aimed at reducing levels of dietary salt and the impact of a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks. Arrospide has published over 30 scientific articles.
