Morning session Basic principles and methods The Workshop participants will be introduced to the basic principles of this type of model, beginning with those related to Poisson for cross-section data. In this regard, data related to health care use in general normally include a large proportion of zero observations as well as a great number of individuals with very high levels of health care use. However, the methodological use of the Poisson model has received criticism for being too restrictive and failing to adapt well to the special characteristics of the data handled in the field of Health Economics. Participants will therefore be presented with information regarding a number of more flexible methodological tools that have recently been proposed and applied to explain and predict the behaviour of health care use data. |

Afternoon session Empirical applications in Health Economics This last part of the Workshop will describe and expand on the latest methodological innovations for analysing panel data, both within the context of latent variables and variables in Health Economics. All of the aforementioned methods will be illustrated with case studies taken from a sub-sample of the European Community Household Survey (ECHP). Workshop Material: The Workshop is based on Chapter 11 of "Models for Health Care Use" by A.M. Jones, N. Rice, T. Bago d'Uva and S. Balia (2012) Applied Health Economics, 2nd Edition, Routledge. As with all the chapters of this book, the chapter related to this Workshop can be worked with using Stata® do files, available at: |
(*) Each session will include a 30-minute break halfway through. The Workshop will be given in English.
