Rafael Pinedo

Rafael Pinedo-Villanueva, PhD, is Associate Professor and Principal Health Economist at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) at the University of Oxford. He is the founder and director of the Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) group, which he established to promote research that integrates economic analysis of healthcare with real-world evidence and outcomes research, with the aim of addressing relevant questions in modern health policy decision-making.

His work lies at the intersection of health economics, 'real-world evidence' (RWE), and outcomes research. Dr. Pinedo-Villanueva's main research interests include economic evaluation of healthcare interventions using decision analytic models informed primarily by non-experimental designs; the use of real-world evidence to assess effectiveness and value for money in routine clinical practice; and the analysis of clinical outcomes, quality of life, and patient-reported outcomes to evaluate the impact of interventions.

Beyond his research and teaching activities, Dr. Pinedo-Villanueva is a collaborator on the Global Burden of Disease study and holds the position of Associate Editor of the journal Value in Health Regional Issues for Western Europe and North America. His academic background is multidisciplinary, with a doctorate (PhD) in Health Economics (Southampton, UK), a master's degree (MSc) in Health Economics (York, UK), a master's degree (MSc) in Public Policy (Caracas, Venezuela), and a bachelor's degree (BA) in Economics and Political Science (Michigan, USA).
